Description

#022     CD 130.1     CAL. ELEC. WORKS     PATENT.     Rich cobalt blue.

One of the all time “classic” insulators.  The combination of highly unusual design, rarity and fabulous color creates one of the most desirable insulators in the hobby.  The majority of those in collections have been found along the Ridge Telephone Company line route, which was constructed shortly after the formation of the California Electrical Works in 1877.  The line was built for controlling water used in hydraulic mining.  One of the first long distance telephone lines in the world (some sources say the very first), extending from French Corral, North San Juan, and Graniteville to reservoirs high in the mountains to the east.

The entire exterior, including the four flutes/projections and the base, remain in exceptional condition.  Has a half moon shaped internal fracture which traverses from near (but not to) the base, over the "Elec" embossing and arching back down to near (but not to) the base on the other side (visible in first photo).  Aside from the arc shaped fracture, the insulator remains in fabulous condition!

From the collection of the late John Ayer.
