Description

#122      PATD AUG 15 16.       Colorless.      Set of six "Cochrane Bells."

Embossed on the top metal fitting.  Known as the “Cochrane Bells,” these large suspension insulators have been found primarily in the State of Montana.  They were patented by H. H. Cochrane of Butte, Montana.  Six separate glass pieces are arranged on an oak center pin with threads on either end.  Cast metal fittings with interior threads fit on each end of the pin, holding the components securely in place.

The vast majority of examples known are amethyst in color.  Only a very small number have been found in colorless glass!   A small group, perhaps less than ten, were discovered within the interior of a power company substation in a small, central Montana town.  Within that limited group, some had damage, so locating an excellent condition example is extremely difficult.

Regular amethyst examples have witnessed considerable demand in recent time, so this rarely encountered “color” should be of special interest to collectors.

Exceptional condition!
