Description

#231     CD 110.6      NATIONAL INSULATOR CO.    PAT. MAY 1.   DEC 25. 1885    JAN. 1.  OCT. 7. 1884.       Blue aqua with olive impurity.      Base embossed.

This stockier mold style of the large "corkscrew" insulator has been found in New Jersey on the route of a long distance telephone line built by the American Telephone & Telegraph Company.  The AT&T line consisted of many wires and was constructed in the middle 1880’s.  The line routed between New York City and Philadelphia, and then to Washington, D.C.  Early construction consisted of several wires using CD 110.5 small corkscrews and CD 102 Brookfield ponies. Apparently only one large corkscrew was used on the ridge pin of each pole.

The line was used and maintained for decades until it was dismantled in the 1950’s.  The poles were removed and the insulators and other debris thrown into the pole holes.  In recent years, collectors have recovered some of them.

The majority of the large corkscrews dug in New Jersey have varying degrees of damage.  Only a small number were found in excellent condition.  This beauty has only a match head base flake that affects only a portion of two letters, and a smaller than pinkie nail, thin flake on the lower skirt.

Much nicer condition than most, and the olive swirl adds a touch of extra color!
