#301 735 U.P.R.R. MULFORD & BIDDLE. Rich blue. Additional olive steaks in the glass.
The 735 threadless insulators with “U.P.R.R.” embossing were produced for use on the historic, first transcontinental railroad line across America, completed in 1869. They were placed in service through Wyoming and into Utah, all the way to Promontory, where the rails of the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific met. Most examples of insulators with the U.P.R.R. marking are aquamarine in color.
Various blue tones and shades have been found, mostly darker shades. This lighter, bright blue color with excellent clarity and richness is quite rare. It is similar to the beautiful blue example offered in Pole Top Discoveries' 78th Catalogue Auction in December, 2019. This remarkable gem is one shade darker than the December example, plus this one has the addition of olive ribbons filtered through the glass.
The vast majority of Mulford & Biddles that were used along the Union Pacific received rough handling, resulting in moderate to extensive damage. Locating even the more readily available aqua examples in non-chipped condition is quite difficult, so finding a bright blue jewel in excellent condition is quite challenging.
The entire outer area is shiny and clean. Remarkable, very near mint condition!
