Description

#311     735      U.P.R.R.     MULFORD & BIDDLE.     Aqua.

Produced for Mulford & Biddle for use along America's first transcontinental railroad, which was completed in May 1869.

A wonderful example with overpoured glass "fin" protruding from the inside edge of the base.  Molten glass squeezed between the base plate and the mold piece that formed the insulator interior.  Normally this excess glass gets roughly removed after production, leaving flakes on the base and skirt interior.  Miraculously, the fin has survived intact on this gem, causing the insulator to set lopsided on a surface.  Great character, leaning noticeably to one side.

Thick dome glass, character and excellent, very near mint condition make it a special jewel!

We wish to note that several examples of 735 Mulford & Biddles have been offered in Pole Top Discoveries' auctions during the past several months.  The majority were from the Lawrence Carpenter collection.  Larry lived in Wyoming and collected for over five decades, with insulators used along the Union Pacific Railroad being his pride and joy.  This offering of a moderate size group of 735's is unusual, and once all of them are offered, especially nice condition examples will become few and far between once again.  This is the last of Larry's exceptional condition, embossed "UPRR" examples, so get one while the gettin' is good!

From the collection of the late Lawrence Carpenter.
