Description

#484       CD 158      BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS.      PATENT APPLIED FOR      Aqua with amber.     Four segmented threads.     Embossed on the inner skirt.

The "Boston Signal" is a rather scarce item, most examples found along railroad right of ways.  They have surfaced in various areas, but mostly in the states of New York and Georgia. The hex dome and four segmented threads are unique characteristics found on insulators produced by Boson Bottle Works.  Samuel Oakman, who was associated with the company in the 1870's, is known for many creative inventions and features on various insulators from the 1860's through the 1890's.

This one has some extra color, with amber impurities streaked throughout, most noticeable in the skirt.

Open base bubble has a shallow base flake on one end and a short skirt bruise/fracture (as seen in second photo).  Remainder of insulator is very near mint, with perfect embossing.

From the collection of the late John Ayer.
