Description

#554       740      TILLOTSON & CO      16 BROADWAY N.Y.        Deep amber.

A rarely encountered item!  Perhaps less than fifteen 740 Tillotson are known, taking into account all known colors!

Boldly embossed with “chiseled” prismatic style marking.  All threadless Tillotson insulators with the “16 Broadway” marking exhibit great class!  It's obvious L. G. Tillotson took great pride in his telegraph supply company and offered only the best of materials.

This type insulator was used along the main line Atlantic & Great Western Railroad and a branch from Leavittsburg to Cleveland, Ohio.  Both had ties with the “Erie.”  A couple dark colored examples have also surfaced in Maryland, and a couple in New York State.

A white pot-stone in the glass caused uneven annealing, resulting in an index fingernail flake on the right dome, not affecting any embossing.  Pinkie nail flake in the right wire groove.  Shallow flakes at base edge.  Sizable chip on the side skirt as seen in the third photo (outlined with pink dots) is only part way into the thick glass.

Dick Bowman collection.
