Description

#616      CD 158.2     BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS.   PATENTED OCT 15 72     (dome embossed).     Dark green.

Quite similar in color to an emerald gemstone, perhaps with a touch of teal.  Very few examples of the “Boston barrel” have been found in this attractive color!  Two or three were located in Connecticut many years ago, and a handful have surfaced in New Jersey.

Produced during the 1870’s by the Boston Bottle Works, in Somerville, Massachusetts.

The unusual hex shaped dome and four segmented threads are characteristics of many Boston Bottle Works insulators.  Samuel Oakman received two patents in October, 1872 for collapsible plungers used in the manufacture of glass insulators which resulted in segmented threading.

Typical of dome embossed examples, some of the lettering is readable and some faint or missing.

Worth a premium for this especially nice condition!   Has only one nick on the upper wire ridge, slightly larger than a match head.  Even the inner skirt and segmented threads are in amazing condition!  Sparkling, shiny surface.

Dick Bowman collection.
