Description

#617      CD 158.2     BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS.   PATENT APPLIED FOR     Aqua.

Produced during the 1870’s by the Boston Bottle Works, in Somerville, Massachusetts using Samuel Oakman's patented process for forming threads in glass.  Oakman received two patents in October, 1872 for collapsible plungers used in the manufacture of glass insulators which resulted in segmented threading.

The shape of the hex dome on CD 158.2 "Boston Barrels" varies from one mold to another.  Note the attractive, bulbous shape of the dome on this example.  Also note both wire ridges extend outward nearly the same distance from the body of the insulator on this mold variant, compared to those on the previous lot.

Bright sparkling glass, shiny surface, and overall very near mint+ condition combine to make this an exceptional example.

Dick Bowman collection.
