Description

#663     U-971      Unmarked.       Gray porcelain.

Although unmarked and produced with different materials than the various  "Elliott" type insulators, this threadless insulator may also have been produced in Bennington, Vermont during the 1850's.  Note the two "inner skirts" on the interior (third photo) which are quite similar to those present on the Elliott types, as well as the Rockingham glazed U-983.

Elton Gish states the late Dick Gay found four of these rarities at the a Brimfield, Massachusetts antique market decades ago.  We are aware of no more than those four in the collecting community.

Attractive gray salt glaze, similar to that found on various crocks, jugs and other utilitarian objects produced in the 1850's.

Half pinkie nail flake and a fingernail flake, both on the lower wire ridge, as shown in the second photo.  Otherwise, excellent condition.

Dick Bowman collection.
