#823 CD 125 HEMINGRAY W.U. NO 5 PATENT MAY 2 1893 Purple.
Wonderful depth of color! Perhaps as dark or darker than any we've ever seen! Most examples of the CD 125 "WU No 5" in the "purple" family are a mix of lighter shades, Rarely are dark amethyst or purple units encountered, and even more rare is this amazing jewel!
Found in the early 1970's, possibly on a railroad in eastern New York State.
The large, beefy drip points remain in fabulous condition with no chips or flakes! Overall, very near mint with a small peck mark (see far right, upper wire ridge in first photo) and a short wire rub in the reverse groove.
A beautiful jewel!
