Description

#860        CD 187       CALIFORNIA       Smoke.

Known as the “Brown Pony,” this style was patented by Robert G. Brown in 1886.  Designed to be mounted on the underside of a crossarm, enabling a larger number of wires to be used on a pole without adding extra cross-arms.

Produced by various glass companies; those marked "California" are scarce.

This type insulator, as well as most other "spool" types, were molded with a  thin, solid glass top, which was punched out after production, always leaving a rough perimeter where the glass was removed.  This unit has the typical coarseness at the top of the pinhole from the factory "punch out" process.

Three shallow, small flakes on the base edge (match-head size or smaller).
