Description

#995      735      U.P.R.R.       MULFORD & BIDDLE       Aqua.

The 735 threadless insulators with “U.P.R.R.” embossing were produced for use on the historic, first transcontinental railroad line across America, completed in 1869. They were placed in service through Wyoming and into Utah, all the way to Promontory, where the rails of the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific met.

The vast majority of these historic gems used along the Union Pacific received rough handling, resulting in moderate to extensive damage. Locating undamaged examples is quite difficult.

This is among the best known, remaining very near mint.  The entire outer area is spotless other than only one super shallow flake, the size of a small match head, up from the base.  Base has two wooden match head shallow flakes, and two others that are smaller.

Sparkling, shiny surface.  The glass brightness and clarity is amplified by the thick dome glass.

During the past 18 months we've offered some nice 735 UPRR's, having received on consignment a nice grouping from the late Lawrence Carpenter collection, as well as those from other collections.  This is the last extra nice one of the entire group, so the great condition examples will likely become more difficult to locate again, once this jewel is sold.

From the collection of the late John Ayer.
