Description

#998      728.8       BOSTON BOTTLE WORKS     OAKMAN'S PAT JULY 26 1870.      Aqua.        With a portion of original wood pin.

Big, bold, base embossing!

Samuel Oakman received a patent on July 26, 1870 for a novel insulator and corresponding pin. The insulator was formed with two opposing, tapered, recessed slots near the top of the pinhole. A corresponding pin, which was split with a wedge in the top, locked into the cavities of the pinhole. This method of attaching the insulator to the pin is identical to the 728.7, Oakman items. Just as with the Oakman's, most confirmed examples of the 728.8 Bostons have been found along the old “York Road” between Philadelphia and New York City.

The 728.8 base embossed “Boston Bottle Works” examples are two or three times scarcer than the 728.7 Oakman marked units, and quite desirable because of the prestigious “Boston Bottle Works” embossing.

It's amazing to gaze into the dome of the insulator, where the wooden wedge protrudes 1/2" above the top of the pin!  Imagine, it's been 150 years since that pin was locked into the insulator!

Aside from some surface haze on the interior, the insulator remains in exceptional, very near mint+ condition.
