Description

#1010     CD 159       PAT. APR. 7TH 1903       F.W. GREGORY.      Aqua.

A highly unusual beehive design with a square center portion. The square body at the mid-section was designed to form a longer area of support for the line wire.

Most examples in collections today were found on a short section of line along the Central Pacific Railroad in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Winter weather conditions in that area are extreme. The Gregory’s were an attempt to provide stronger insulators, able to withstand the heavy snow and wind conditions.

The wire groove of this design is especially prone to damage, and most examples are heavily chipped. This unit fared far better than the majority, remaining as one of the best condition examples known.  All embossing is intact.  Both of the bottom front corners and one on the bottom rear remain totally damage free!  The other five corners have some flaking, but smaller and to a far lesser degree than is usually seen.  Shallow base chip.

If you've been waiting for one of the better condition examples to become available, wait no longer!

From the collection of the late John Ayer.
