Description

#1695        CD 187       CALIFORNIA        Burgundy amethyst.

Known as the “Brown Pony,” this style was patented by Robert G. Brown in 1886.  Designed to be mounted on the underside of a crossarm, enabling a larger number of wires to be used on a pole without adding extra crossarms.

"California" embossed examples are scarcer than those marked with other manufacturer names.

This jewel has darker and more defined burgundy amethyst coloration than many examples, creating excellent contrast in a color run of California embossed 187's.

Very shallow surface bruise on reverse top (see white dots showing outline, to the left in second photo).  Has the typical coarse glass where the "break out" was removed at the pinhole top (some factory grinding at the top) during manufacture.  Entire remaining area on the insulator in excellent condition!
