Description

#1795      731      Unmarked.      Dark amber.

The 731 was one of numerous threadless types known as the "compromise" style insulator, which was introduced in 1865.  It was described in contemporary articles as being a combination of an egg and hat style insulator.  The concave skirt was the key feature of the design.

Typically, unmarked 731 are found in various shades of aqua glass, the amber units being much scarcer.

This one is somewhat distorted, both the upper and lower wire ridges being somewhat compressed inward, skewing the insulator off center somewhat.  Neat character!

Surface chip, up from base is 2/3 the size of a 25¢ coin.  Shallow flake on base is a little larger than a wooden match head.  Sparkling, shiny surface.

A dark color, but does pass some light when placed on a glass shelf in a back lighted cabinet.
