#1829 723.3 With wood cover. Aqua.
A "Wade" type threadless insulator with the original wood cover and tie wire still intact. The 723.3 is the "smooth type," lacking the dots and dashes as found on a 723..
This insulator design was referred to as the "Wade type" at the time of their usage, mostly during the early to middle 1860's.
An ancient tag marked "Monon Route" accompanies the insulator. Written in ink on the old tag: "Old insulator found while excavating at Cloverdale. Probably first used." This is in reference to Cloverdale, Indiana, where the old railroad line traversed through, in a north - south direction. The person who recorded the discovery on the tag was correct, this was one of the very early insulator types used on a telegraph line through the area.
In a wonderful state of preservation, the wood remains mostly intact. From one side, the wood appears quite complete. The best of both worlds, the opposite side has just enough decay that a very small portion of the glass insert is visible in the upper portion.
Glass insert appears to be in excellent condition.

Update: 10 P.M Sunday, October 31. Fellow collector Matt Weldon shares the following information ............................. "A little more info about the Wade threadless from Lot # 1829. I have a book about the Monon Line, and it says the whole telegraph line from New Albany to Michigan City was put up in 1859. The very first picture in the book taken in 1868 in New Albany shows two threadless on a pole that look like Wade threadless. "
