Description

#1832     723.3      Unmarked.      Aqua.

Known as the "Smooth Wade," these glass inserts were used in conjunction with a beehive shaped, wood covering (see third image).

They were used extensively by the Western Union Telegraph Company, mostly during the early to middle 1860's.

Has two flat chips on the base interior.  The void seen at base in the second photo was created at the time of manufacture by a fold in the glass.  A white, opaque impurity trails downward through the skirt and to the base in that area, causing most of the defect.

Plunkett Family Collection.  Found on the Columbus & Xenia Railroad in Ohio, approximately 1978-79.
