Description

#1886      CD 159      PAT. APR. 7TH 1903     F.W. GREGORY.      Dark aqua.

An unusually shaped insulator!  A beehive design with a square center.

The four sides of the insulators form a square shape to create a longer area for the line wire to rest upon, thus creating greater strength.  Some were used along the old Central Pacific Railroad route in California where high elevation in the mountains resulted in heavy snowfall being a common occurrence.

The glass seems to be slightly darker than previously encountered examples.

All four bottom corners remain perfectly intact, as does one top corner in the front.  Embossing is fully intact as well.  One front corner repaired.  The reverse has a large surface slice from the wire groove to the dome.  When this was repaired many years ago (now removed) the repairer needlessly ground the glass surface around the edges, so the casting resin would adhere better.

It's difficult to locate a Gregory with fully intact embossing.  Five unblemished corners is also a characteristic seldom encountered.
