Description

#1938      F.M. LOCKE   PAT DEC 15 96.      VICTOR        Aqua and tan.

Large, two piece "Gutter Top" high voltage insulator.  Boldly stamped markings in the porcelain top.

The top porcelain section has a small inner skirt (not the glass section).  An area comprising about 1/3 of that small porcelain inner skirt has separated slightly.  It's still in place, but might eventually work free.  The spout lip on the top porcelain piece has been shaved off, flush with the regular round contour of the main body (see second photo).  Pinkie nail chip on front edge of ear (to the right in second photo).  The large glass bottom section is free of chips and cracks.  It does have some surface abrasion in the middle section, apparently where it rubbed against something.

Update: 12:55 P.M. Monday, November 1.  Photos #4 & #5 added.  In the original description, a "separation" was described.  Perhaps it would be better to call it a horseshoe shaped crack.  Photo #4 has five red arrows.  The left three arrows show the position of the crack in the inner skirt.  The right two arrows show the area the crack leads to.  In Photo #5, the two red arrows show the area where the crack ends, further around the insulator.

This fracture likely occurred when the cement expanded slightly between the porcelain skirt and the glass skirt.  Note also the old cement used to join the two pieces together in Photo #4.
