Description

#2106      Unmarked.       Yandell type block.     Yellow green.

An early form of insulation, similar to the rectangular shaped glass block, only cylindrical in form.  This type insulator was patented by John Yandell in October, 1851 (see third photo).  Few examples have been found, mostly in the Midwestern part of the US, although variants have surfaced as far south as Louisiana and as far north as Toronto, Ontario Canada.

This rarely encountered yellow green example was dug, having an attractive "rainbow sheen" on the surface from exposure to the elements.   Photographed with ambient light, and with backlighting to show the various effects different lighting creates.

One shallow surface chip is old, and covered with the iridescent coloring.  Another is more recent (shiny), on the interior.  Otherwise, excellent.

A rare one!

From the collection of the late Cecil Boos.
