Double character! The glass is loaded with thousands of tiny bubbles, and there's a massive base under-pour! Bubbles just under the surface wrap around the contour of the curved base on this 158 year old jewel used on the Collins Overland Telegraph line in British Columbia
Manufactured for Tillotson & Company, a large 1860's railway and telegraph supply house in New York City, then supplied to the Collins project. Insulators were shipped from New York City, all the way around Cape Horn at the tip of South America, then up the Pacific Ocean route to San Francisco. The next leg was from San Francisco to British Columbia.
Supplies arrived in New Westminster, British Columbia in June 1865, then transported along the course of the Fraser River and Cariboo Wagon Road, where the single wire line was quickly constructed northward to just beyond Quesnel before the close of the season.
Well defined skirt embossing. Most of the dome embossing is easily readable with the exception of the far right which is hidden by the rippled, crude glass surface.
Exceptional, very near mint condition! A spectacular beauty!
