Description

#2273     Unmarked.       Wood block with iron/rubber rams-horn.

This type of rams-horn and wood block configuration was used on various lines in the West. They were installed on the 1861 transcontinental line from California, through Nevada and into Utah. Various other lines constructed in the 1860’s and early 1870’s in California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington also employed them.

Nelson Goodyear received a patent on May 6, 1851 for an improvement in the manufacture of India Rubber, which was used as a component in this type insulator.

In 1858, Moses Farmer and John Batchelder received a patent for an "improvement in telegraph insulators" involving the use of Goodyears india rubber along with an iron rams horn type insulator and a wood block.

Wood is weathered from exposure to the elements, and has some splits and separation.  India rubber shield surrounding the metal rams horn is split and has some loss on the lower edge.

Great "old" appearance on this unit, still retaining the three original "cut" nails.
