Description

#2277       742       M.T. CO.       Rich cobalt blue.

Amazing, rich, dark colour!   Various blue shades/hues have been observed in 742 threadless, this perhaps the darkest and most vivid.  While lighter blue shades/hues surface occasionally, only a handful of these dark examples have been verified.

Embossed on the base, with lettering for the Montreal Telegraph Company.  The Montreal Telegraph Company was organized in Montreal in 1847.  The company expanded its territory with time, and by 1872 had 20,000 miles of telegraph wire in operation.  Lines crisscrossed all areas with  mentionable population all through eastern Canada, ranging from Ontario to the eastern Maritime Provinces, and into some northern States of the U.S.

Produced circa 1860's.

Half pinkie nail flake on base edge barely removes a small portion of the "C" and most of the very small "O."  A dug item with some lightly dull areas on outer surface.  Inner surface has rainbow oxidation.  Insulator in very nice condition 3/4 the distance around.  One area has a bruise up from the base with some adjacent shallow chipping, and a chip in the wire groove (see second photo).

The insulator hasn't been scrubbed since it was found, so still retains some rust in the groove and residue on the surface, which would likely clean up for a more attractive appearance.  The vast majority of the blemishes/damage is confined to one portion of the insulator, so it displays well from most angles.

Update:  5:30 P.M. Thursday, February 17.  Third photo added showing base with strong embossing.
