Description

#2322        CD 109        CHICAGO INSULATING CO.      PAT. OCT.16. 1883.      Aqua.

Base embossed.

A very unusually designed insulator that's rarely encountered.  The CD 135 insulators supplied by the same company are readily available to collectors, but the "pony" style seldom surfaces for sale.  Pole Top Discoveries has offered very few pony examples over the past several decades, an indication of their lack of availability.

Most of the few known CD 109 surfaced in New York State decades ago.

The unusual design, patented by Bradley Fiske and Samuel Mott, was likely produced for a limited period of time during the 1880's.

The fourth image above depicts a wonderfully detailed illustration of the pony style insulator as it appeared in a folded brochure, circulated by the Chicago Insulating Company.  The information supplied stated: "...they are the strongest, most efficient, the best made, with perfect screw, and the cheapest in the market, all things considered."

The example offered in Pole Top Discoveries November, 2021 Event #2110 realized $5320 with buyer premium, indicating an approximate current value of one in very near mint condition.

Chipping extends half way around the base, removing "CO" and "OCT 16 1883" lettering.  Surface annealing line on part of the dome is about 1/8" at deepest point.   Displays excellent!
