Description

#2471      INDIA RUBBER WORKS CO  LD.         Brown stoneware.

An early British insulator, possibly dating from the 1860's-1870's period.

India rubber and gutta percha were insulating materials used in the telegraph industry as far back as the 1850's.  They were produced from the sap of trees, mostly Asian species, and used to insulate telegraph wire and cables.

Apparently a British Company was formed using the "India Rubber" name, likely a supplier of that type material along with other telegraph supplies.

This and one other example appeared in an antique auction earlier this spring, and are the first examples we've heard of with this marking.

A rarity for those who pursue early telegraph types.

Shallow surface flake at base and lower skirt is likely from contact with another surface during firing.  Top of dome is just a little less shiny than remainder of insulator.

Well defined, deeply impressed lettering on the upper skirt.

Update: 6:00 P.M, Friday, October 28.  This item does not have an insert within the pinhole.
