Description

#2768     P. WALTERS & CO   LONDON.     FCUN.      White porcelain with cast metal cover.

Insulator height: 4-1/2 inches.  Height with iron pin included: 8 inches.

A highly unusual design that has two arms for holding a line wire and oval cutouts in the skirt, apparently to allow rain water to cleanse insects and debris away. The “FCUN” marking is a railroad name and P. Walters was a telegraph supply company. Bernie Warren and Jim Bergman discovered these English made, early pieces in Uruguay. Bernie wrote a story about them in the November, 1995 issue of crown Jewels Magazine.

Bernie states: “Jose Luis Rubio, a good friend in Montevideo, solved the mystery of the FCUN embossing and its significance. FCUN stood for Ferro (rail) Carril (road) Uruguay Norte or literally, the Railroad of Northern Uruguay.

Printed materials given to us by Jose Luis Rubio show that a concession was granted by the government of Uruguay on January 12, 1870 for the construction of the Railroad of Northern Uruguay (FCUN). This railroad was to run from the city of Salto, Uruguay to the current cities of Belle Union and Artigas, Uruguay, both on the Brazilian border."

Jim Bergman shared some fun photos of he and Bernie Warren retrieving this type insulator from the railway line in Uruguay.  Included are two images of them attempting to cut the crossarm on a pole with a saw attached to a pole.  Note the bird nest on opposite side of the crossarm shown in the closer, third view.  A fourth image shows a Walters insulator silhouetted against the sky, with iron prongs mounted to the crossarm to discourage birds form building a nest.

Excellent overall condition.
