Description

#2829       CD 102        WESTINGHOUSE   NO 3.        Light green.

Limited numbers of five different styles of low voltage insulators have been found with "Westinghouse" embossing.  CD 102, 113, 116, 134 and 162 are all designs marketed by the company.  Although a specific glass works has not been positively identified as a source, these insulators may well have been produced by a glass factory operated by Westinghouse in Pennsylvania.  The facility did manufacture other glass products that would have been consistent with the high quality and great clarity found in Westinghouse insulators.

An interesting characteristic about some glass Westinghouse insulators is the peculiar separation marks on the interior surface of the glass.  There are often times shallow crevices on the surface, much like that of a thin layer of mud on a hard surface that has contracted while quickly drying.  This likely has to do with the glass formula and reaction to a lower temperature threaded mandrel being inserted into the molten glass.  Quite a unique feature to this type insulator.

Flat base chip as shown in second and third image.  Remainder of insulator in excellent condition!
