#2968 CD 263 PATD MAY 12 1891 COLUMBIA. Dark aqua with amber.
Nicely pronounced amber swirls inside the glass, most noticeable in the ears. Quite attractive!
Samuel Oakman patented the use of an "eye or eyes" on an insulator as shown in the accompanying patent application drawing. The patent was applied for on August 17, 1889 and granted on May 12, 1891... the date found embossed on many "Columbia" type insulators.
The larger "Columbia" type insulator is available in CD 263 and 264. The CD 263 has been found in two differing saddle groove widths, this being the much scarcer wide groove type.
The glass characteristics and molding techniques appear to be that of the Brookfield Glass Company.
One of the more unusual insulator designs, and quite popular among collectors, this being an exceptionally desirable example with the colorful amber swirls in the glass.
Two minor, shallow flakes on ear edges. Glass is bright and shiny... a beautiful example!
