Description

#3036       CD 699      L' ELECTRO VERRE      SNCF      Dark green.

Affectionately known as the "Frog," these rank as one of the most unusual and complex glass insulators ever made.  They were produced for the French National Railway (Societe  Nationale des Chemins de fer Francais), thus the "SNCF" embossing on the skirt.

Height is 5-1/4 inches.

A composition cap (not shown but included in this lot) covered the top disc portion of the insulator, helping to keep the interior wires dry and protect the fragile design.

Perhaps four or five are known to have been found on poles.  Most of the small number now in collections were part of a limited number of unused units that Bernie Warren obtained from a railway employee many years ago.  They seldom change hands, and are highly desirable among collectors.

Considering most poles have now been removed from railway properties, odds are against finding more in the wild.

Imagine the value of a highly unusual item like this, if it were equally rare and made in the US!!!!!  Perhaps when an updated book and price guide is published on international insulators, more and more collectors will appreciate the rarity and desirability of incredible examples such as this.

The very thin lip on the bottom edge of the disc is only about 1/16" wide.  One inch of this 1/16" projection is removed (see to the right in second photo) and continues as a chip on the underside of the disc.  Otherwise, the insulator remains in great condition and displays perfect from many angles.

There are no more frogs to be offered from the Bergman collection, so we are fortunate to have the opportunity to offer this one from another consignor.

If you are going to own a frog, you'd better have a GREEN one!

Update: 5 P.M. Friday, March 24.  Fourth image added showing the flat, flake type chip on the underside of the glass disk portion of the insulator (outlined with small white dots).  The only portion of the chip that's visible from above or about eye level, is the removal of the narrow, protruding lip at lower portion of the disc.  Note the four holes which traverse through the entire thickness of the disc (for wires to pass through when the insulator is in use).
