Description

#2963       135.5       E.R.W.         Aqua.

An amazing example in wonderful condition!

A very popular insulator with collectors.  The pilgrim hat style is generally associated with threadless types, so a "hat" style in a threaded insulator is unusual.  The large, bold "E. R. W." embossing is also quite impressive, representing the Erie Railway

These beauties have been found at various locations on the mainline Erie through southern New York State and northeastern Pennsylvania, and to a lesser degree on some of the Erie branch lines.

This beauty was discovered during the 1960's in Portage County, Ohio by collector Mike Johnson, and has been in his collection for over 50 years. It adorned a crossarm for decades, along with a CD 156.1 Postal Tel Co, along the route of what had been a branch line of the Atlantic & Great Western Railway (Erie Ry controlled), between Leavittsburg and Cleveland, Ohio.

Very near mint+ condition, which is remarkable for this damage prone design!

The accompanying map shows the mainline A&GW and the Cleveland branch highlighted in blue.  Note the colorful, large broadside mentions "Express & Telegraph Route" on the Atlantic & Great Western Railway (map and broadside not included in this lot).

Mike & Shirley Johnson collection.
