Description

#3069        SIEMENS    1    PATENT         Iron and white porcelain.

An early type insulator, dating to the 1860's.

A very similar example is shown in W. Keith Neal's book (Fig 7 & 8) titled "Railway and Other Rare Insulators."  Keith states: "The first is signed on the iron cover 'Siemens Patent 1' and is recorded in the Patent Records as No 464 of 1863.  It is formed of a single shed of porcelain with the heavy iron cover completely protecting it.  In its center is an iron rod cemented into the porcelain and completely bound with gutta percha forming at its base a hook through which the wire is threaded."

Wonderful overall condition, the iron remaining free of any surface rust and the porcelain interior remaining completely undamaged.
