#610 731 Unmarked. Dark yellow amber.
The 731 was one of numerous threadless types which were known as the "compromise" style insulator, which was introduced in 1865. It was described in contemporary articles as being a combination of an egg and hat style insulator. The concave skirt was the key feature of the design.
Typically, unmarked 731 are found in various shades of aqua glass, the amber units being much scarcer. This particular example has a density that passes light through the skirt in window lighting, showcasing the attractive yellow amber coloration quite well.
Flat base chip indicated with two red arrows in the second picture. Otherwise, very near mint.
From the collection of the late John Ayer.
