Description

#673       735       SO. EX. CO.        CHESTER N.Y.         Light aqua.

The “So. Ex. Co.” lettering is believed to represent the Southern Express Company.  Formed in 1861, the company operated for a number of years in the Southern States of the US.  The express business of the company expanded southward from Virginia to Florida, then westward to Mississippi, Louisiana and the Arkansas-Texas state line.  Express service was provided though Tennessee, Kentucky and westward as far as St. Louis and Springfield, Missouri.  The company also offered telegraph service, and apparently had insulators produced on special order for at least some of their communication lines.

Strange as it might seem, all known aqua examples have either been found in New Hampshire or in the vicinity of the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming.

Quite rare, with perhaps less than a dozen whole examples known.

A fracture/bruise in the right dome of the "SO EX CO" side (see red arrows in second photo) continues as a tight fracture on the "Chester" mold half, shown with red arrows.  The darker, horse-shoe shaped area at center of dome on the "SO EX" side is not damage, rather shading from an air pocket on the interior.  Only the thin diagonal line and area to the right are damage.  One of few known lacking significant chipping.

From the collection of the late John Ayer.
