Description

#993      Unmarked.     Early sleeve insulator.      Dark, vivid, inky-sapphire blue.

Although unconfirmed, we believe this is a glass sleeve used in conjunction with a rams-horn type hook.  Most likely used in a manner quite similar to the aqua unit as shown in Lot #992 of this sale.  Perhaps the horn, long shank and screw threaded portion of this type was all metal, and did not have a rubber coating, much like the drawing in the third photo. The round collar shown above the hook in the illustration (third photo) would fit snugly inside the recess (see second photo) within the glass.

Some light wear/rubbing on the inside surface of the "through hole" indicates contact with metal at one time, supporting the theory of rams horn type usage.

One of only two examples we've encountered, likely dating circa 1850's-1860's.

A dug item with small surface blemishes as seen in the first photo.  Shallow base chips, as seen in the second photo.

Dick Bowman collection.
