Description

#1143         CD 257       HEMINGRAY     PATENT JUNE 17 1890    MAY 2 1893       Opaque electric blue.

The attractive electric blue coloration of these "Mickey Mouse" insulators makes them very popular with collectors.  Aside from the bright blue coloration and white globs seen in the majority of examples, this one has an additional opaqueness throughout, and some pronounced milky opaque swirls.

Usage of these bright blue gems has only been confirmed at one location, on power lines in the Kansas City area.  However, although we can't positively confirm this unit was used elsewhere, the consignor has shared an interesting tidbit of information.  He states that the previous owner claims to have located this insulator "in the wild" and had a lineman retrieve it for him.  That previous owner is now deceased so we can't positively confirm where this might have taken place.  He lived in northwestern Pennsylvania, and is not known to have travelled out of his area, so there is a possibility this one may have seen usage in Pennsylvania.

Displays very, very near mint from the patent dated side, which is where the large white glob is located, and the milky opaque swirls show to nice advantage in the ears.  The third photo shows a base bruise at the 8 - 9 o'clock position and an internal halo around an impurity in the glass that cooled at a different rate.  Four drip points are only partially flaked.
