Description

#1659       731      Unmarked.      Deep green    Mold line over dome variant.

The "Compromise" style insulator, with concave skirt, was introduced in the mid 1860's, and immediately was widely used by various telegraph companies.  Several slightly different versions were manufactured, the 731 being the most popular.

Most examples were manufactured using aquamarine colored glass.  This dark green coloration is quite a lot scarcer, produced in smaller numbers.

The dark colored glass has an attractive sheen on the surface.  Wire groove is crude and pebbly.  When displayed on a glass shelf in a back lighted cabinet, light passes through the skirt, exhibiting the green color.

Skirt chip (second photo) is half the size of a 50¢ coin.  Shallow, pinkie nail chip on base.  Two flash lines, up from the base, are 1/2' to 3/4" in length.
