Description

#2110       701.6        Unmarked.        Aqua with snowy impurities.

Known as the “Confederate egg.”  Discovered at a Richmond, Virginia construction site in 1990.  The aquamarine coloration is rarely encountered in this large style egg insulator.  Of the hundreds of eggs found at the Richmond site, the vast majority were dark green variants.  Only a very small number aqua units were discovered, making them quite desirable.

Manufactured with an extremely crude, pebbly surface.  One area of the wire groove is so pebbly and crude, it is nearly filled with glass!

Most of the examples found had sizable chips or internal fractures from the sudden temperature change when the area burned during the exodus of citizens and Confederate troops in April, 1865.

This crude relic faired better than the majority of examples, having three shallow, fingernail size surface chips.  Another chip at the base edge (third photo).  Some damage to report, but far nicer than most examples in this rarely encountered color.

From the collection of the late Cecil Boos.
