Fabulous color! A stunning yellow mustard-olive color that is unique to these insulators. Early threaded telegraph styles are seldom found in such exotic coloration.
Most or all of the known W.U. 5’s in this color were discovered in the Black Hills region of South Dakota and the extreme north-eastern portion of Wyoming. The few known dazzlers were found on rural telephone lines in those two bordering states. The reason for an older style telegraph insulator being found on later, circa 1900-1910 telephone lines remains a mystery.
1871 side has a smaller than match head flake on upper wire ridge. The WU 5 side has a pinkie nail chip on upper wire ridge (see center of second photo).
