Description

#2358       CD 288       BY R. D. MERSHON       Aqua.

Three ridges on each side of the skirt, designed to shed moisture off the insulator.  This triple ridge design is much more difficult to obtain than the typically encountered type that has only one ridge on each side of the skirt.

Ralph Mershon’s 1898 patent specifications included text covering the ridges and the long inner petticoat. The design was an attempt to prevent moisture from landing on the crossarm below, and for the overall skirt configurations to be more efficiently proportioned to optimize insulating properties.

The very top of the insulator has a coarse, sandpaper type texture, possibly caused by small bits of glass inside the mold when the molten glass entered.

As for damage, this one faired much better than most... with only minor flakes to the ridges on one side.  It's a nice one!!!
