Description

#2415     742       M.T. CO.      Dark cobalt blue.

Embossed on the base, with lettering for the Montreal Telegraph Company.  The Montreal Telegraph Company was organized in Montreal in 1847.  The company expanded its territory with time, and by 1872 had 20,000 miles of telegraph wire in operation.  Lines crisscrossed all areas with  mentionable population all through eastern Canada, ranging from Ontario to the eastern Maritime Provinces, and into some northern States of the U.S.

Produced circa 1860's.

Examples of this style insulator in aquamarine colored glass can be obtained without difficulty.  However, the dark cobalt blue units are rare!  In the past, ten or more years has elapsed between examples being offered for sale.  Out of coincidence, and the "right" collections changing hands, three of them have been available in the past few months.  This is the last of the three, so there may be a dry spell again in the future once this example is sold.

Two sizable pieces were broken out of the skirt and glued back in.  An elongated, very shallow surface chip the size of an elongated penny has been resin repaired.  All of the repair was done many years ago, and some of the seams have changed color.  The insulator still looks nice on the shelf, but if redone, would look fabulous.  Glass is 99% complete.  Surface "fisheye" on dome can be seen in second photo.

Very small flake removes only half of the crossbar in the "T."  Base remains in very nice condition.  Surface appears poly coated.

Fabulous colour!!!!!!  Priced at a small fraction of what a very near mint example would be valued.
