Description

#2766       Unmarked.      Iron covered brown stoneware.

From Great Britain.  Once part of Keith Neal's collection, later purchased by Marilyn Albers after Keith's passing, and still later became a part of the Lis & Jim Bergman collection after Marilyn passed.

Keith Neal, in his book book titled "Railway and Other Rare Insulators" describes this insulator on page 11, figure 9:  "The second insulator shown in Fig. 9 bears no name but is without doubt the fore runner of the Fuller Bow example shown in Vol. 1, Fig 48.  This was patented in 1867, No 1720."

"The interior is similar to a 'Double Varley' : a brown porcelain outer shed cemented into an inner shed and the iron spindle cemented into that."

"The outside iron cover which is a heavy casting, has two hooks cast integral with it, and 2-1/2 inches apart on one side only.  These are arranged so that the line wire can be dropped into both grooves when it is slack, but when pulled tight it draws the wire hard against the side of the iron cup and holds it firmly in place.  It is a highly ingenious and clever insulator which had but  a shirt life."

Some iron covered examples are available if patience and time is allowed.  However, this is a very rare form, that simply is not available.

Outer iron shell in excellent condition.  The main stoneware Varley insert in excellent condition,  inner-most shed of the Varley has some damage.

From the Lis & Jim Bergman collection.

Update 6:20 P.M. Wednesday, January 25:  The original description stated the insert is "white porcelain" in error.  It is actually brown stoneware.
