Description

#3285       PAUL SEILER  ELECTRICAL WORKS     SAN FRANCISCO.

Brass and iron telegraph key and sounder attached to a mahogany base.

The Seilers marking is stamped into the brass tag located on the wood base.  Additionally, the sounder arm is marked "Manhattan Electrical Supply, New York."

Paul Seiler emigrated from Germany in 1866 and settled in San Francisco.  He was proprietor of the California Electric Power Company, where in 1876 he applied for an insulator patent.  It was issued on February 6, 1877... the elusive and desirable CD 130.1.  A short time later Seiler became superintendent of the newly formed California Electrical Works, a position he held for a number of years.

In the late 1880's Seiler parted ways with CEW, and started the Paul Seiler Electrical Works, also in San Francisco.  The company offered various telegraph, telephone and electrical supplies and apparatus for many years thereafter.

A scarce "go with" for the collector of Western Telegraph items.

Excellent  condition.
