The 731 saw usage in the middle to late 1860's. They were among the most widely used threadless types during that period, being placed in service at various places across the US. One of the more well known localities they were installed by the Western Union Telegraph Company was along the route of the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming and Utah.
