Description

#3586      735       MULFORD & BIDDLE       Aqua.

A threadless insulator dating from the mid to late 1860's.  Found almost exclusively in the western US and British Columbia, Canada, including the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming, where quantities of them were installed.  Only a handful of examples are known to have been found in the eastern US and Canada.  Apparently this size/design was well suited for easier and lighter transport to destinations far from where they originated.

Produced by an unknown glasshouse in the middle to late 1860’s for Mulford & Biddle.   Although an 1865 Mulford & Biddle advertisement in a telegraph trade paper (see third image) only mentions they were a “manufacturer” of telegraph wire, they apparently also offered other telegraph supplies, as evidenced by this type threadless insulator and the 735 units which also carry their name.

A sizable piece in the front skirt was missing and has an old repair.  It is a half inch wide at the base, then flares outward and upward to the wire groove (visible in first photo).  A penny size chip on the reverse skirt also has an old resin repair.  The resin has yellowed somewhat with time.  The resin was spread on the surface surrounding the penny chip area, so the chip repair might appear larger in the photo than the actual size.  Insulator is clear coated.
