Description

#3604       CD 640       VA        Olive.

Height: 3-7/8 inches.  Known as the "Gingerbread Boy."

Very attractive olive coloration with amber influence.  Most insulators in the gingerbread family are made of dark green colored glass.  Examples of this color seldom surface, and are eagerly sought by collectors.

A glass factory by the name of La Verrerie Ouvriere d’Albi was formed in 1896 in the town of Albi, France.  Bottles were produced at the glasshouse for a number of years.  In 1917, the factory began making insulators for the French National Defense.  Various insulators were manufactured at the plant, including the CD 640 Gingerbread Boys with VA marking.

Third image is a vintage illustration of the factory.  Courtesy Lis & Jim Bergman.

A wide range of colors were manufactured in insulators with "VA" marking, and the group of five in this auction is a great opportunity for both the novice and advanced collector.  Both very affordable and very rare items are represented.

Very near mint.
