Description

#3652         CD 123       E.C&M CO S.F.       Aqua with olive-amber impurities.

Height: 4 inches.  Mold style "B."

Attractive, olive impurities in the form of streaks and patches are present throughout the glass in this early Western jewel, making it desirable to collectors.

EC&M’s saw widespread usage throughout the West in the 1870’s, first on telegraph lines, and then on telephone lines as that means of communication became more popular. They have been found as far north as British Columbia, Canada, and southward into Mexico. A few have even surfaced in Hawaii. Most were used in California and Nevada, to a great degree on railroads and lines constructed for mining purposes.

Aqua examples, with varying degrees of olive amber or amber impurities have been found at various locations.  One 1870's line route in particular is well known in the collecting community as having yielded decades ago, a number of "contaminated" jewels, that being the route of the Ridge Telephone Company line in Northern California.

The Ridge Telephone Company line was constructed shortly after the formation of California Electrical Works in 1877.  The line was built for controlling water used in hydraulic mining.  Recognized as the first long distance telephone line in the world, it extended from French Corral, North San Juan, and Graniteville to reservoirs high in the mountains to the East.

The Ridge Telephone line often followed the general course of hydraulic mining ditches, sometimes followed roads, and often cut cross-country, using the shortest route.  The fourth photo depicts hiker along a ditch, high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, that was used to convey water to hydraulic mining operations at lower elevation.

Attractive, crude, whittled surface.

A beauty that remains in very near mint condition!
