Insulator height: 4-1/4 inches. Height of insulator and pin: 9-3/4 inches.
Never cleaned, still retaining attractive surface grime.
This exact insulator appears as Fig. 59 on page 52 of W. Keith Neal's book titled Searching For Railway Telegraph Insulators. The caption states: "Fig. 59 Great Central Railway. large Varley's pattern two piece insulator. It has a porcelain inner shed, but brown stoneware outside with a screwed spindle."
Originally in the collection of the late W.Keith Neal, later in the collection of Marilyn Albers, and still later Jim & Lis Bergman.
Old paper tag still attached from the time it was in Neal's collection.
1-1/8 inch flat chip on base is slightly visible to right in photo. An associated, very faint hairline extends upward on the skirt for about one inch. Otherwise, excellent condition.
