Description

#3113       723       Dots and Dashes.      Aqua.

Known as the "Dot & Dash Wade," these glass inserts fit snugly into a large, beehive shaped, wood covering (see second image).

They were used extensively by the Western Union Telegraph Company, mostly during the early to middle 1860's, as well as numerous private lines during the same time period.

Exceptional, very near mint condition.

Formerly in the Plunkett Family Collection.  Skip Plunkett dug this one on the Columbus & Xenia Railroad in Ohio.

Update,  3:15 P.M Tuesday, July 4:

This item was termed "very near mint" in the original description.   There's a paper thin (actually tissue paper thin) flake up from the base, the size of a wooden match head.  It's hard to determine where it is, even when you are looking for it.  Only detectable upon going over the insulator with intense scrutiny.

The small mark at center of the raised ring is a narrow, small open bubble (not damage).  The pinhead size, dark spot on the base edge is a completely enclosed bubble, not damage.

Many collectors would call this one "mint."  Tough to find one nicer!!!!!!
